NRAO Loans 12 Meter Telescope to University of Arizona
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is pleased to announce that it has loaned its 12 Meter Telescope and associated equipment, located on Arizona's Kitt Peak, to the University of Arizona for a period of six months. We understand that a consortium led by the University of Arizona will be preparing a proposal to submit to the National Science Foundation, the telescope's owner, for the eventual takeover of the telescope. Observers interested in using the 12 Meter should contact Dr. Lucy Ziurys. The 12 Meter data archive will be maintained by the NRAO Tucson office. For observers needing access to archived data, contact Jeff Mangum. We will continue to offer data analysis services through our downtown Tucson computer system by request. If you would like information on the former 12 Meter Telescope system, see the links under the former 12 Meter Telescope web page or contact Jeff Mangum.
After nearly 32 years of service to the astronomical community, the 12 Meter Telescope conducted its last astronomical observations as a US national facility on 26 July 2000. Appropriately, the final data set was an On The Fly (OTF) image of the CO 1-0 emission from a star formation region in the Cygnus-X (also available in postscript format) region. So long old friend...
