Interstellar carbon monoxide (CO) and several other basic molecules were first detected twenty-five years ago with the 36-foot telescope of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. These discoveries have profoundly influenced our understanding of several diverse yet related fields, including the phases of the interstellar medium, the initial and final phases of stellar evolution, the chemistry of dense and diffuse interstellar matter and the solar system, the structure of the Milky Way galaxy, and the content and structure of other galaxies. These research areas are among the most fundamental in astrophysics, and the spectroscopic information provided by CO and other molecules serves as the primary tool of investigation. New developments in instrumentation will further increase the power and utility of molecular line spectroscopy. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the detection of CO is a timely opportunity to bring researchers in all these areas together to review progress and discuss future directions. The emphasis of the meeting will be on CO and other molecules as tracers and diagnostics: What have we learned from CO? What instrumentation will we need or desire? What scientific problems and challenges will we face?
Over five days the Symposium will include invited review talks on the major topics along with contributed presentations describing current research in the many sub-fields represented. Most of the contributed papers will be presented in poster format. The current schedule contains a list of speakers.
Pre-registration for the Symposium is required. Please complete the following registration form and return it via mail, e-mail, or fax.
Upon receipt of your registration form, you will be sent a confirmation. After arrival at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, please check in at the Symposium Registration Desk to obtain the Symposium packet and to sign up for excursions. The registration desk will be open Sunday (28 May) from 3:00 pm until the start of the Welcome Reception and throughout the meeting.
The registration fee for the Symposium is:
US$175 or US$215 (with Proceedings)
Payment must be made in the form of check or money order (payable to CO Symposium); or credit card (Visa or MasterCard) and be drawn on US funds.
Please register for your hotel room as soon as possible! The 28 April date for reservations is now past -- reservations are on a space-available basis only. Please contact our Symposium Coordinator Jennifer Neighbours (jneighbo@nrao.edu) if you have questions.
The Symposium venue, Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, is located high in the foothills of the rugged Santa Catalina Mountains bordering Tucson on the north. Almost hidden in the lush vegetation of the Sonoran Desert, the Resort provides a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty, charm, and tranquility of this superb Southwestern setting. We encourage you to share the experience with your family and friends. A special room rate of $95+tax per night SINGLE OR DOUBLE occupancy is in effect for the CO Symposium. Children under 12 stay free in room with parents. The conference rate will be honored from Saturday (27 May) through Sunday (4 June). Our room block is limited; PLEASE REGISTER EARLY. Deadline for reservations is 28 April 1995; after that, on a space-available basis only. ROOM RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE DIRECTLY WITH THE RESORT using the included form...
If you have not already done so, on your registration form please state if you would like to make a presentation, and provide a title and short abstract. The deadline for oral contributions is past.
The SOC has made its contributed talk selections. Many more oral contributions were requested than time could permit. Those selected have been informed by email. All those not selected for orals have automatically been changed to poster format. Thank you to all who requested orals. Both the oral and poster sessions promise to be excellent.
Our deadline for poster and revised abstract submission (15 April) is now past. Thank you to all those who met the deadline -- this has helped us a great deal! The abstracts will be included in a Book of Abstracts that will be given out at the start of the meeting. Note: these are not necessarily what will be included in the conference Proceedings. Instructions for Proceedings submissions will be included in your registration packet.
If for some reason you were unable to meet the 15 April deadline -- please send us your abstract anyway. We CANNOT promise it will make it into the Book of Abstracts, but every attempt will be made to do so. Plain text is all that is needed. You can also send us TeX or LaTeX by email (symp95@nrao.edu), or a fax if you prefer. It is important that we know you will be making a poster presentation(s), so that we can insure enough space is available to all.
Symposium Proceedings will be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. PLEASE NOTE: Cost of Proceedings ($40 for participants) can be added to the registration fee (see above). Manuscript instructions and submission deadlines will be provided in the registration packet. [ftp LaTeX style files]
A number of taxi-cab companies are also available. Be prepared to spend $25 to $30 each way.
Leaving Tucson International Airport, drive north (1/2 mile) on Tucson Blvd to Valencia Blvd. Turn right (east) on Valencia and continue about 1.5 miles to Alvernon Way. Turn left (north) on Alvernon Way; after about 4 miles it will curve east and become Golf Links Road. Continue east on Golf Links for about 1 mile to Swan Road, keeping in the left lane. Turn left on Swan Road and drive north into the foothills (about 7.5 miles) to Sunrise Drive. Turn right on Sunrise and continue east (2.5 miles) to Kolb Road. Turn left (north) on Kolb and drive 1.5 miles to N. Resort Drive (see rock "LOEWS VENTANA CANYON RESORT" on corner); turn right and you've arrived.
Details concerning fees and times will be sent out in the very near future.
In addition, there are numerous choices for personal adventuring in and around Tucson: Pima Air Museum (for aviation buffs); Mount Lemmon; Sabino Canyon, Catalina State Park, and Madera Canyon (all great for hiking!); Tombstone and Bisbee (for a taste of the Old West); Chiricahua National Monument; Sahuaro National Monuments East and West; Old Tucson (site of Western moviemaking -- likely closed due to a fire. Sorry.); plenty of galleries and museums; golf courses (including the nationally known 18-hole PGA course at LOEWS VENTANA CANYON RESORT) -- to name a few.
