John Bally (Univ. of Colorado; Chair) Jaap Baars (MPIfR and SMTO) Leo Blitz (Univ. of Maryland) Dennis Downes (IRAM) Edith Falgarone (Ecole Normale Superieure) Harvey Liszt (NRAO) Tetsuo Hasegawa (Univ. of Tokyo) Nick Scoville (CalTech) Ewine van Dishoeck (Leiden) Glenn White (Queen Mary College)

Interstellar carbon monoxide (CO) and several other basic molecules were first detected twenty-five years ago with the 36-foot telescope of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. These discoveries have profoundly influenced our understanding of several diverse yet related fields, including the phases of the interstellar medium, the initial and final phases of stellar evolution, the chemistry of dense and diffuse interstellar matter and the solar system, the structure of the Milky Way galaxy, and the content and structure of other galaxies. These research areas are among the most fundamental in astrophysics, and the spectroscopic information provided by CO and other molecules serves as the primary tool of investigation. New developments in instrumentation will further increase the power and utility of molecular line spectroscopy. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the detection of CO is a timely opportunity to bring researchers in all these areas together to review progress and discuss future directions. The emphasis of the meeting will be on CO and other molecules as tracers and diagnostics: What have we learned from CO? What instrumentation will we need or desire? What scientific problems and challenges will we face?

GENERAL TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED:

Over five days the Symposium will include invited review talks on the major topics along with contributed presentations describing current research in the many sub-fields represented. Most of the contributed papers will be presented in poster format. The current schedule contains a list of speakers.

ABSTRACTS AND PROCEEDINGS:

If you have not already done so, on your registration form please state if you would like to make a presentation, and provide a title and short abstract. The deadline for oral contributions is past.

The SOC has made its contributed talk selections. Many more oral contributions were requested than time could permit. Those selected have been informed by email. All those not selected for orals have automatically been changed to poster format. Thank you to all who requested orals. Both the oral and poster sessions promise to be excellent.

Our deadline for poster and revised abstract submission (15 April) is now past. Thank you to all those who met the deadline -- this has helped us a great deal! The abstracts will be included in a Book of Abstracts that will be given out at the start of the meeting. Note: these are not necessarily what will be included in the conference Proceedings. Instructions for Proceedings submissions will be included in your registration packet.

If for some reason you were unable to meet the 15 April deadline -- please send us your abstract anyway. We CANNOT promise it will make it into the Book of Abstracts, but every attempt will be made to do so. Plain text is all that is needed. You can also send us TeX or LaTeX by email (symp95@nrao.edu), or a fax if you prefer. It is important that we know you will be making a poster presentation(s), so that we can insure enough space is available to all.

Symposium Proceedings will be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. PLEASE NOTE: Cost of Proceedings ($40 for participants) can be added to the registration fee (see above). Manuscript instructions and submission deadlines will be provided in the registration packet. [ftp LaTeX style files]

TRAVEL TO TUCSON --

By Car:

Tucson can be reached via the Interstate 10 (or I-19 from the south). From the I-10, take the Ina Road exit (#248) east. After about 7 miles, Ina will become Skyline Blvd and after 2 more miles, Skyline will become Sunrise Drive. Continue east on Sunrise for about 5 miles (past the intersections of Swan and Craycroft) to Kolb Road. Turn north (left) on Kolb. Drive approx. 1.5 miles to sign on rock "LOEWS VENTANA CANYON RESORT" corner N. Resort Drive; turn right and you've arrived!

Air Travel:

Under a Group Contract with American Airlines, discounted airfares are available to participants (family and friends) originating within the 48 contiguous US states, Hawaii, San Juan, St. Thomas, and St. Croix to either Tucson or Phoenix. Travelers are reminded that Saturday-layover fares are substantially lower. Discounts will also apply to the lowest fares available. Airfares may be lower into Phoenix than Tucson. To obtain additional information and for reservations, please contact American Airlines Meeting Services Desk 1-800-433-1790 and specify STAR File Number: S0455UG. Discounted fares are available from Canada as well. We regret that this offer cannot be extended to our other international visitors. Tucson Inter- national Airport is also serviced by: Aero Mexico, America West, Continental, Delta, Northwest, and United Airlines. In addition to these, Phoenix Sky Harbor is serviced by Alaska, British Air, Northwest, Southwest, TWA, and US Air. Travel time by car from Phoenix to Tucson is approximately 2 hours. (See RENTAL CARS below.)

TRAVEL WITHIN TUCSON:

The Arizona Stagecoach is the easiest and most economical way to get from the Tucson International Airport to Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. Upon arrival, go to the Stagecoach dispatch desk located in the center corridor of the baggage claim area. State you are with the CO Symposium for special conference fares $15.50 for one, $26 for two, and additional savings for three or more. Vans depart frequently from the island outside the ARRIVALS level. Notify the Ventana front desk 24 hours prior to departure to reserve the Stagecoach back to the Airport.

A number of taxi-cab companies are also available. Be prepared to spend $25 to $30 each way.

RENTAL CARS:

Budget Rent-a-Car has been selected as the official car rental provider for the CO Symposium. Special discounted rates are being extended to attendees and are available one week before and one week after the meeting dates. The rates include unlimited free mileage. Budget cars are available at Tucson Inter- national Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, and at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. To reserve a Budget car at the Tucson Airport or Loews Ventana Canyon Resort: call 1-800-279-3734 and provide Group ID Code Z95. If arriving at Phoenix Sky Harbor: call 1-800-227-3678 and provide Group ID Code 2116.

Leaving Tucson International Airport, drive north (1/2 mile) on Tucson Blvd to Valencia Blvd. Turn right (east) on Valencia and continue about 1.5 miles to Alvernon Way. Turn left (north) on Alvernon Way; after about 4 miles it will curve east and become Golf Links Road. Continue east on Golf Links for about 1 mile to Swan Road, keeping in the left lane. Turn left on Swan Road and drive north into the foothills (about 7.5 miles) to Sunrise Drive. Turn right on Sunrise and continue east (2.5 miles) to Kolb Road. Turn left (north) on Kolb and drive 1.5 miles to N. Resort Drive (see rock "LOEWS VENTANA CANYON RESORT" on corner); turn right and you've arrived.

RECREATION:

A number of planned tours will be available to the Kitt Peak National Observatory, Mount Graham International Observatory, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and the Grand Canyon (including Montezuma's Castle and Sedona). If you are interested in attending one or more of these possible excursions, please fill out the excursion sign-up form and return it with your registration form.

Details concerning fees and times will be sent out in the very near future.

In addition, there are numerous choices for personal adventuring in and around Tucson: Pima Air Museum (for aviation buffs); Mount Lemmon; Sabino Canyon, Catalina State Park, and Madera Canyon (all great for hiking!); Tombstone and Bisbee (for a taste of the Old West); Chiricahua National Monument; Sahuaro National Monuments East and West; Old Tucson (site of Western moviemaking -- likely closed due to a fire. Sorry.); plenty of galleries and museums; golf courses (including the nationally known 18-hole PGA course at LOEWS VENTANA CANYON RESORT) -- to name a few.
